Four (4) Ways To Mastering Your Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is all about the key to understanding everyone around you

The ability to understand and manage your emotions is vital for your own mental and physical health.

It'’s also essential for your social wellbeing and for your relationships with other people.

Here, Gill Hasson, an expert in the matter, shares her four top tips for developing your emotional intelligence...

1. Take responsibility for your emotions
People often say or think things like, ‘"She embarrassed me’ or ‘He made me angry’." Not so. Nobody made you feel something. You create your emotions by the way you choose to think and respond to what other people do and say.

2. Know your emotional triggers
Think of the situations that you know will trigger your emotions. What makes you scared? What winds you up? What sort of people and situations leave you feeling disappointed? If you know what sets you off, you can develop strategies to manage difficult emotions.

3. Stop and think
Most situations need clear, calm thinking rather than a blind, emotional response, you need to be able to stop and think, to access the rational thinking part of your brain.

4. Remind yourself
How can you remind yourself to think before you speak? Maybe use a bracelet or another piece of jewellery that you touch or tug to remind you to stop and think.

You could also write a note that says STOP! THINK! And place it on your computer, fridge or someplace where you’re likely to see it when you want to manage your emotions effectively.

A good saying to remember is ‘"Emotions say hurry. Wisdom says wait.’"
